ThememoryoftheHP48isnotinfinite.Thedefaultamountisonly32 Kb(32Kilobytesisabout32,000characters).Forthisreason,itmaybe necessarytoincreasethememorybyusingRAMcards.IntheHP48SX, twoportsareprovidedforthispurpose(foundonthebackofthemachine underneaththecoveratthetop). ButevenifyoudonS^tneedmorememory,theHP48alsoallowsyouto easilyloadinformationfromothermachines.Afterall,whyre-typedata orprogramsthatalreadyexistonanotherHP48?Thisisnofun,and errorsareeasilymadeintheprocess.Itismuchmoreusefultoexchange datadirectlybetweenmachinesorstoretheprogramsonacomputer. Plug-InCards(HP48SX) Therearetwotypesofplug-incards:ROMandRAM. ROMismemorythatyoucanonlyread(ReadOnlyMemory).Its informationcannotbemodified.ThereareactuallyfourtypesofROM: ' realROMs,(likethosecontainedintheHP48); ' PROMsorProgrammableROMs; ' EPROMswhicharePROMsthatcanbeerasedbyultra-violetlight; ' EEPROMswhichareElectronicallyErasablePROMs. TheEEPROMtypeofcardisthemostcommon,anditissoldpre- programmed(e.g.theHPSOLVERcard).Youcouldactuallymakeoneof theseyourself(usinganEPROMorEEPROM),butitwouldbecostly. 6.SavingandTransmittingData PM65-001.p65 11/07/2001,08:1553
